Should fat people be a protected class, like minorities and people with disabilities? The difference to me seems to be that you usually have a choice in being fat.

NO ONE should be a protected class. If I own a business, I have the right to only hire thin white people. I also have the right to deny any potential Asian customers.

I'm against hate crime legislation in the first place, as it contradicts the prinicples of equal protection under the law. Someone who murders a homosexual should not receive a harsher OR lighter sentence than someone who murders a heterosexual.

Secondly, this discrimination against fat people is overblown. It's like saying employers are in the wrong by saying that they would rather hire a presentable applicant over an ugly one given equal qualifications. Employees typically have to interact with other employees, clients, or patrons. If appearance can affect business, then it should affect the hiring process.

I think that should extend to an employer's right to hire whomever they want. If a manager thinks they'll get more business with all white or all male employees, that should be their right. It's up to customers/patrons/clients to decide whether that is the kind of business with which they wish to do business.

Are we going to start getting on law firms for hiring disproportionate numbers of Jews? Or NFL teams for drafting disproportionate numbers of African Americans?

Some fat people don't have a choice in being fat. They're just fat.

Even if they had a choice of being fat....should making fun of skinny people be illegal? Babies? People with moobs?

And what constitues a hate crime? poking fun or beating up? Because I make fun of moobs ALL the time. I don't wanna go to jail for that!

If you eat fewer calories than you expend, you'll always lose weight. The laws of thermodynamics are cool like that.

If I have a genetic issue that results in weight gain, then I'd have to spend 6 hours a day working out...everyday. I might as well have NO choice in the matter because that's not practical.

Instead of working out, you could just eat less food. Everyone has a base amount of calories they burn in just being awake and staying alive. If you eat fewer than that, your body has no choice but to burn fat.

Here's the REAL issue: Humans are fucked up. You need laws like no murder theft or rape but once you start micro-managing crimes and adding multiple sub-categories with different punishments it waters everything down.

Fat people like everyone else deserve a fair chance, you just shouldn't make laws demanding it.

What I think I'm trying to say is it would be nice if everything was perfect but it isn't and never will be, keep the laws simple and don't get caught up in some sort of this is more unfair because of "x" argument.
